Excess deaths

Weekly deaths in Cyprus compared with what the season would lead us to expect, monthly deaths by cause compared with the same month in earlier years, and hospital discharges compared with the trend.

Eurostat weekly deaths

How it works

For each week we fit a seasonal baseline to the previous five years of spring and autumn weeks, in the style of EuroMOMO, and measure how far the week is from it (a z-score). A z-score of 4 or more counts as substantial and is recorded as an event. From 2 to 4 it is shown as elevated.
